I'm sitting here in my dorm room wrapped in my Slanket (like a Snuggie, but BETTER and SOFTER!) listening to City And Colour. It's the week before finals week, and I can't help but think how incredibly fast this semester. It seems like last week I was moving into my new dorm room and starting classes again. But, nope, that was really four months ago. Where did time go?!
Anyways, just like any other day, I started drifting into dream land today during my world lit class. I don't know why, but it seems that every single class, no matter how much I love it or hate it, I still end up daydreaming, even for just a second. So today, I was thinking to myself: What happened to chivalry? I don't know what triggered it, we were reading poetry so that might have something to do with it.
Honestly, what happened? I mean, at least from my experience, you don't see too many young gentlemen going around holding doors open for us ladies; pulling chairs out, to let us sit; or walking on the outside of the sidewalk to protect us from getting splashed by rain residue from passing cars; or standing up when a woman enters the room, and shaking hands. Nope, you don't see too much of that going on today. I'm beginning to think movie writers just make up this stuff, because that is the only time I see it.
Living on a college campus, I just see young gents (are they even deserving of that title?) and ladies passing by each other as they cross the street. Rarely do people hold doors open for each other. What is this world coming too?! Does anybody else notice this?!
The real problem is that, I think I was born in the wrong era. I would love to live in the '50s, the time of Frank Sinatra, Humphrey Bogart, and Dean Martin. Now those were some daper men. They knew how to speak to and treat a lady. If I could go back in time, that's where I would go. And I would go on a date with Frank.
I found this on Twitter, too and it just seemed to fit with this post. "It's funny how most music today is about how much the guy wants to hook up with you, when all the Beatles wanted to do was hold your hand." When will guys realize that it's the little things that count?
Let me know if you see any brave young men daring enough to partake in these old-fashioned acts of chivalry. It'll be a rare occurence and definitely one to document!
xoxo
